Hospice and Palliative Care
What is Hospice and Palliative Care?
Hospice is a comfort based form of care for Veterans who have a terminal condition with six months or less to live. Palliative care is a form of treatment that emphasizes comfort care but does not require that the Veteran have a terminal condition.
Hospice and Palliative Care focus on pain relief and comfort in a way that respects personal, cultural, and religious beliefs and practices. Hospice also provides grief counseling to family members. This care is available to Veterans in their home, community, outpatient or inpatient settings.
Am I eligible for Hospice and Palliative Care?
Hospice and Palliative Care are part of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Standard Medical Benefits Package. All enrolled Veterans are eligible if they meet the clinical need for the service.
Are there copays?
Copays are not charged for Hospice and Palliative Care, whether they are provided by VA or an organization with a VA contract. Home Hospice is provided through contract with community hospice agencies.
What services are provided?
Our Hospice and Palliative Care programs offer the following services:
- Physician Care
- Nursing Care
- Emotional Support
- Spiritual Counseling
- Nutritional Counseling
- Recreation Therapy
- Bereavement Counseling
- Volunteer Support
Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy as well as psychological support are offered through Palliative Care.
What are the features of the Hospice inpatient center?
A large, sunlit great room adjoined by a modern kitchen provide a pleasant, home-like atmosphere for Veterans and their families to spend special moments. A family meeting room offers a quiet space for reflection.
Each private suite has a patient bedroom, family sitting and sleep over area, as well as a bathroom and porch. Each suite has a refrigerator and microwave oven for family use.
An Individualized Approach
Our Hospice and Palliative Care services provide comfort to Veterans during their last days. Our health care professionals have extensive experience providing these services, and do so with the utmost care and compassion.
Each Veteran receives an enhanced level of care as he or she nears death. Our goal is to alleviate pain, distress and loneliness during this time. Our dedicated staff is committed to providing the best life and a peaceful death for our Veterans.
