Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Extended Access to Services
Veterans registered with Coatesville VA Medical Center (CVAMC) now have access to live yoga, tai chi, qigong and meditation instruction thanks to a new partnership with Ompractice that began Monday.
Ompractice is offering 16 weeks of free access for Veterans who participate in self-management programs for chronic pain, diabetes, weight loss and evidence-based treatment for mental health. More than 50 instructors host 20 classes each day including yoga, tai chi, qigong, mindfulness and meditation.
The partnership, in the works long before social distancing was a familiar phrase and finalized on January 31, enables CVAMC to further increase Veteran's access to complimentary services through the VA by removing geographic, financial, and convenience barriers for Veterans looking to access complimentary treatment resources from any Wi-Fi enabled location convenient to them.
Laura Henry, Whole Health Program Coordinator at CVAMC explains, "Until now, Veterans were only able to access yoga [and meditation] a couple days out of the week. Traditionally events are held during business hours when many Veterans have conflicting priorities, whether it be work, school or family."
To celebrate their new partnership CVAMC and Ompractice offered an introductory course to a select group of Veterans last week. Bel Broadley, a six-year Vietnam era Veteran of the U.S Air Force and experienced yoga student was one of those who participated.
"I can set it up in my house. I don't have to commute to the VA. I can just turn it on," said Broadley.
She went on to say this would provide her more freedom in terms of scheduling and opens up a world of yoga.
Ompractice offers yoga classes for novices, seasoned practitioners and classes for people looking to address specific needs including prenatal, neck and back pain, and amputees.
"It is our hope that Veterans will have the best outcomes for their treatment goals by having increased access to these services," said Henry.
Veterans who are registered with CVAMC and their Community Based Outreach Clinics in Spring City and Newtown Square and are interested in adding Ompractice to their existing care plan should speak to their provider about whether Ompractice is a good fit for them.
