Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center
According to the Institute of Medicine, health care in the U.S. should be safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient-centered.
The Veterans Health Administration is the largest integrated health care system in the country with 150 VA medical centers and more than 800 outpatient clinics nationwide. At the national level, the system sets performance and budget goals, and operates numerous performance measures and monitors. Every medical center and community based outpatient clinic aims to provide health care that meets certain benchmarks.
Regularly updated patient access data is available for all VA Medical Centers and Community-Based Outpatient Clinics including average wait times, number of patients waiting for a scheduled appointment and number of patients that cannot be scheduled for an appointment in 90 days or less. To view this data, go to http://www.va.gov/health/access-audit.asp.
The Department of Veterans Affairs operates the VA Hospital Compare website (similar to the consumer Hospital Compare website run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services). The portal links consumers to various data sources that compare Veterans Health Administration medical centers and outpatient clinics across the system. In short, the goal is to measure timely and effective care, partly defined by patient experiences, readmissions, complications and deaths.
Because the Coatesville VA Medical Center does not have an acute care or surgical focus, some common measures do not apply. There are a few dashboards that have good information on the Coatesville VA Medical Center though. ASPIRE contains quality and safety data in comparison to VHA goals. A user guide is available. SAIL or Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning is a balanced scorecard that measures, evaluates and benchmarks quality and efficiency. Visit the SAIL website. A fact sheet is available.
Budget and Performance
At the national level, VA publishes various reports on agency strategic plans, and priority goals, along with a performance and accountability report financial statements. Visit VA Performance.
