Hellertown Resident Leads Facebook Gift Drive
A Hellertown resident organized a gift drive collecting more than 100 gifts for Coatesville VAMC Veterans over Facebook and delivered the gifts on Tuesday during a luncheon event.
Veterans living in the CVAMC Community Living Center and Hospice units, gathered for a holiday meal donated by Wegmans Food Markets and were on hand to receive gifts gathered by employees who provided a wish list to Andrea Feher, a 39-year-old Supervisor of Finance for a large healthcare organization in Hellertown.
David Haring, an Army Veteran and resident of the CLC said, "This was great. I wasn't expecting to get anything, at all."
Feher worked closely with Wanda Brown, a recreational therapist in the CLC to find out what the 72 Veterans would like to receive this holiday season.
"Andrea is incredible," said Brown. "It's not just about activities. It's about creating an environment; creating a special space, making them feel as homey as possible. She brings love into the environment and that is an important element for me."
Feher then reached out to her donation network to supply the blankets, jackets, scarves gift cards and personal care items each of these Veterans requested. This year, when Feher posted the list of gifts to the Hellertown Community page on Facebook all the gifts assigned were filled within a few hours. Feher was amazed by the response.
"This community was so receptive and, like me, they were looking for an opportunity to give," said Feher.
Feher went back to CVAMC and got the rest of the wish list. This time she posted it to the Doylestown Community Facebook page. This second list was filled within an hour.
"The generosity of the 85 people who responded to my Facebook posts, who fulfilled these wish list items made this happen," explained Feher. "That includes the Blue Star Mothers who called up and donated 70 personal care kits."
The Blue Star Mothers of America Inc.'s Lehigh Valley Chapter PA201 also offered to take care of any unfulfilled requests.
This is Andrea Feher’s third year leading the gift drive for in the Community Living Center and Hospice.
Now that she has been doing this a few years, Feher said, "Come October, November, people are asking her, "What are we doing this year? Do we have a list yet?""
We will see what next year brings but this year the effort of one Hellertown resident and the generous support of the Hellertown and Doylestown community has livened up this year's holiday party for the medical center's community living centers.
